A QA (quality assurance) manager owns the systems that prevent defects and keep an operation compliant, rather than the inspection that catches them. The work centers on process, equipment and computer-system validation, document and record control, the corrective-and-preventive-action system, and continuous audit readiness for regulators, notified bodies and customers. In regulated manufacturing — pharma, medical device, food, aerospace — the QA manager is accountable for a documented, validated quality system and often holds release or sign-off authority for product.

Quality assurance (QA) is about prevention and systems: it builds and maintains the processes, validation, documentation and audits that keep defects from happening and prove compliance. Quality control (QC) is about detection: it inspects, tests and measures product against specifications to catch defects that do occur. A QA manager owns procedures, validation and CAPA; a QC manager runs inspection, the test lab and metrology. The two functions are complementary, and in smaller organizations one quality manager covers both.

BLS gives no separate figure; QA managers are counted under Industrial Production Managers (SOC 11-3051), which shows an OEWS May 2025 median of $126,060 a year, or $60.61 an hour, with $78,000 at the 10th percentile and $205,520 at the 90th. Because that code pools plant management broadly, it understates the premium in heavily regulated pharma and medical-device QA. Pay rises with regulated industry, validation and compliance depth, and progression into director of QA and regulatory-affairs roles.

It depends on the sector. In pharma, biotech and medical device, a life-science or engineering degree is typically expected because the work turns on understanding the product and its regulation. In food and general manufacturing, strong regulated-quality experience plus certification can substitute for a specific degree. What all routes share is deep knowledge of the governing framework — GMP, ISO 13485, HACCP or AS9100 — and demonstrated competence in validation, CAPA and audit readiness.

For people who like rigor, documentation and regulatory problem-solving, it is a stable and well-paid path, and regulated industries treat competent QA managers as essential because compliance is a condition of selling product. The ladder runs to director of QA and regulatory affairs with executive-level pay. The trade-offs are the weight of release authority, the pressure of a regulatory inspection, and the discipline of keeping a validated system and its documentation continuously audit-ready.
