A quality control manager runs the inspection and testing operation that catches defects. That means managing the inspectors, the test lab and the metrology room; ensuring incoming, in-process and final inspection happen and produce trustworthy data; owning gauge control and calibration so measurements are defensible; and driving the nonconformance and containment process so defective product does not move forward. The manager keeps SPC and inspection data flowing back to production quickly and is accountable for defects caught before they reach the customer.

The typical path is coming up through inspection — inspector to QC lead to senior inspector — mastering metrology, CMM programming, first-article and PPAP work and gauge control along the way. You add statistical process control and inspection-system knowledge, earn ASQ certifications from Certified Quality Inspector or Technician up to Certified Quality Engineer or Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, and then take responsibility for the whole inspection and testing operation and the team that runs it.

A quality control (QC) manager runs the detection side: inspection, the test lab, metrology, gauge control and nonconformance containment — catching defects in the product. A quality assurance (QA) manager runs the prevention side: process validation, documentation, CAPA and audit readiness — stopping defects from happening and proving compliance. QC is hands-on with parts and measurements; QA is systems and procedures. A broader quality manager often owns both, and in smaller plants one person covers the whole function.

BLS gives no separate figure; QC managers are counted under Industrial Production Managers (SOC 11-3051), which shows an OEWS May 2025 median of $126,060 a year, or $60.61 an hour, with $78,000 at the 10th percentile and $205,520 at the 90th. That code pools plant management broadly. Pay rises with the sophistication of the metrology operation, the precision of the industry — aerospace and medical device pay more — and broadening from the inspection function into the wider quality organization and director roles.

Not always. Quality control management is one of the quality-leadership roles most often reached from the floor: a skilled inspector can climb through lead and senior inspector to QC manager on metrology and CMM competence plus ASQ certification, without a four-year degree. A quality-engineering or manufacturing degree helps and is more common on the quality-engineer and director track, but demonstrated ability to run a trustworthy inspection, metrology and gauge-control operation is what the QC-manager role actually requires.

It is a solid, well-paid management path for people who like measurement, problem-solving and running an operation, and it is one of the more accessible routes into quality leadership because it can be reached from an inspection career. Precision, aerospace and medical-device manufacturing keep skilled inspection and metrology in demand. The trade-offs are the pressure of being the last line before a customer, the friction of holding production's product, and the constant discipline of keeping gauges calibrated and inspection data defensible.
