A quality manager owns the organization's quality management system end to end. That means maintaining the documented ISO 9001 (or IATF 16949, AS9100, ISO 13485) system, running the internal-audit program, hosting registrar and customer audits, driving corrective and preventive action to root cause, managing supplier quality, and reporting quality metrics to leadership in management review. The distinguishing feature versus a quality engineer or inspector is scope: the manager is accountable for the whole system and the people who run it, not a single process or product.

The common path is a technical or engineering degree, several years as a quality engineer, inspector lead or process engineer, and progressive responsibility for audits, corrective action and supplier quality. Along the way most managers learn their industry's standard in depth — ISO 9001 plus IATF 16949, AS9100 or ISO 13485 — and earn ASQ certification, typically a Certified Quality Engineer or Certified Quality Auditor first and then the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence as they move into system ownership.

None are legally required, but the recognized ladder is ASQ certification. The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) is the management-level credential most aligned to the role, usually held alongside a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) for technical depth and a Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) or ISO 9001 lead-auditor qualification for the audit program. In automotive, aerospace and medical device, knowledge of IATF 16949, AS9100 or ISO 13485 is expected on top of ISO 9001.

BLS has no separate figure; quality managers fall under Industrial Production Managers (SOC 11-3051), which shows an OEWS May 2025 median of $126,060 a year, or $60.61 an hour, with $78,000 at the 10th percentile and $205,520 at the 90th. That code pools many plant-management roles, so the band is wide. Pay rises with the standard managed, multi-site scope and progression into director and VP of quality positions, which sit at and above the upper percentile.

The titles overlap heavily and in many companies are the same role, but where they are distinguished, a quality manager tends to own the entire quality system and its outcomes — control, assurance, supplier quality, audits and metrics together — while a QA (quality assurance) manager emphasizes the prevention and systems side: process validation, documentation, CAPA and audit readiness, especially in regulated industries. Quality control, by contrast, is the inspection and testing function. In practice the split depends on how a given organization structures its quality department.

It is a stable, well-paid management path for people who like systems, standards and root-cause problem solving. Because certified quality systems are a condition of doing business in automotive, aerospace, medical device and much of manufacturing, demand for competent quality managers is durable, and the ladder runs to director and VP of quality with executive-level pay. The trade-offs are the pressure of owning quality when something reaches a customer, the diplomacy of driving corrective action across departments, and the constant discipline of audit readiness.
