Paycheck Calculator FAQ

Did Alabama stop taxing overtime pay?

It did, temporarily. From January 2024 through June 30, 2025 Alabama exempted hourly employees' overtime pay from state income tax, a first-in-the-nation experiment. The exemption lapsed on schedule and was not renewed, so overtime earned from July 2025 onward is taxed at the ordinary 5% rate again. Federal tax and FICA always applied to it.

What is the Alabama state income tax rate?

Alabama's three brackets are 2%, 4% and 5%, but the thresholds are so low ($500 and $3,000 of taxable income for a single filer) that the 5% rate covers essentially all wage income. The brackets have not been indexed for inflation.

Do any Alabama cities charge a local income tax?

Some Alabama cities levy an occupational licence tax on wages earned in the city, Birmingham withholds 1% and Gadsden 2%. Most of the state, including Huntsville and Montgomery, has none.

How much of my salary do I keep in Alabama?

Typically 72% to 80% of gross between $40,000 and $120,000 for a single filer taking the standard federal deduction, before voluntary deductions. A $65,000 salary nets about $50,900 after Alabama state tax. Enter your exact salary, filing status and deductions in the calculator for a precise breakdown.

Alabama Take-Home

Take-home pay in Alabama: what makes it different

Alabama paychecks lose federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) and Alabama state income tax. Alabama's income tax is progressive on paper but effectively flat in practice: the top 5% rate begins at just $3,000 of taxable income, so every full-time trade salary pays 5% at the margin. A handful of cities, Birmingham among them, add a local occupational licence tax of about 1% on wages earned inside city limits. A single filer earning $65,000 takes home about $50,900 a year (~78%), roughly $3,250 of which goes to the state. Enter any gross salary for the exact breakdown. (This page's table applies the 5.0% effective rate carried in the site's state-tax dataset.)

How does Alabama take-home compare to nearby states?

Alabama's flat-in-practice 5% sits above Mississippi's 4.4% and well above Tennessee's zero, so a Birmingham worker keeps roughly $3,300 less a year on $65,000 than the same salary in Nashville. Against Georgia's 5.39% flat rate Alabama comes out marginally ahead. Cost of living, among the lowest in the country, is what closes the gap.

What deductions come out of a Alabama paycheck?

Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% to $176,100), Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% over $200,000), Alabama state income tax, and any voluntary pre-tax items you elect: 401(k), health premiums, HSA or FSA contributions and union dues.

How does Alabama gross pay compare with the national median?

Alabama trade wages run about 10% below the national BLS OEWS median, a 0.9× wage index. Huntsville is the growth engine, Redstone Arsenal, the aerospace and defence corridor and the Mazda Toyota assembly plant keep industrial and electrical crews booked, while Mobile runs shipbuilding at Austal and Airbus final assembly, and Birmingham's UAB medical district anchors commercial work. Take-home is the product of both sides, gross scale and the tax schedule, so compare a Alabama offer against another state using the salary calculator for gross and this page for net.
