CT is a specialty on top of the base license, not a separate profession. Every CT technologist starts as an ARRT-registered radiologic technologist (radiographer); the CT credential is a post-primary certification earned through documented scanner experience and an additional exam. Day to day, the radiographer shoots plain films while the CT tech runs cross-sectional protocols, times contrast boluses and builds 3D reconstructions — which is why CT carries the pay premium within the shared BLS occupation.

The modality guarantees it: CT is the emergency department's default scanner for stroke, trauma and chest pain, so hospitals staff it around the clock. New CT techs frequently start on nights or evening rotations, and call coverage is standard at smaller facilities. The compensation mirror is real, though — shift differentials, call pay and overtime are a substantial share of what carries CT techs past the occupation's $80,110 median — and outpatient imaging centers offer business-hours alternatives.

It is one of imaging's best effort-to-reward ratios: an associate degree plus an employer-funded credential reaching six-figure potential at the 90th percentile, demand anchored by emergency medicine's dependence on the scanner, and 4.3% projected growth with about 12,900 annual openings. The costs are radiation-safety discipline, physically moving patients, and shift work early on. The ladder is concrete: cardiac CT, dual CT/MRI credentials, lead-tech and imaging-supervisor roles.
