Roughly one to two years. CAAHEP-accredited neurodiagnostic technology programs run as 12-month certificates or two-year associate degrees, both including supervised clinical hours. After graduation you assemble the record portfolio ABRET requires and sit for the R. EEG T. exam, which most technologists complete within a year of finishing school. Some hospitals still train entry techs on the job, but that route takes longer to reach exam eligibility.

BLS does not publish a standalone EEG wage. Technologists are counted in Health Technologists and Technicians, All Other (SOC 29-2099), whose OEWS May 2025 median is $50,290 a year ($24.18/hr), with $38,180 at the 10th percentile and $85,270 at the 90th. No state licenses EEG technicians. What employers require instead is certification from ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation — the R. EEG T. registry for routine work, with CLTM for long-term monitoring and CNIM for surgical neuromonitoring. Because there is no licensing board to enforce a floor, the credential is the entire hiring signal, and most hospitals now list R. EEG T. as required or required-within-a-timeframe on the job posting.

You measure the patient's head and place electrodes to the international 10-20 system, verify impedances, then record at least 20 minutes of resting activity while documenting patient state, movement and artifact. Standard activation procedures — hyperventilation, photic stimulation and sleep deprivation — are performed to provoke abnormalities. You annotate clinical events in real time and prepare the record for a neurologist, who is the only one who interprets it.

Both apply scalp electrodes, but an EEG technician records brain electrical activity for neurological diagnosis — epilepsy, encephalopathy, stroke and brain-death exams — usually in daytime outpatient labs, ICUs and operating rooms. A polysomnographic technologist runs overnight sleep studies, adding respiratory, oxygen and limb-movement channels and titrating CPAP. Their credentials differ too: ABRET certifies EEG technologists, while the BRPT issues the RPSGT for sleep.

Yes — this is one of the field's strengths. The ladder is credential-based rather than degree-based: adding ABRET's CLTM moves you into epilepsy monitoring units and continuous ICU work, and CNIM opens intraoperative neuromonitoring, the best-paid branch, where technologists work alongside surgeons during spine and skull-base cases. Lab supervisor and ABRET lab-accreditation coordinator roles are the other route, both built on registry credentials plus experience.
