Four-handed dentistry means the operator never leaves the field: you transfer instruments into the dentist's hand in the correct orientation, maintain isolation and suction, and stage the tray so the next instrument is already in your hand. It requires knowing the procedure sequence well enough to anticipate rather than react. Candidates who describe watching the dentist's hand position rather than waiting to be asked are describing the real skill.

Transport contaminated instruments in a closed container, presoak or ultrasonic clean, rinse and dry, inspect for debris and damage, package with an internal and external chemical indicator, load the autoclave without overpacking, run the correct cycle, and verify the cycle before storing. Add weekly biological spore testing with documented results. Any answer that skips cleaning before sterilisation is describing a failed process.

Correct sensor or film placement with the holder and beam-alignment device, patient positioned with the occlusal plane parallel to the floor, the beam perpendicular to the sensor to avoid overlap, and the exposure set for the patient. Retakes usually come from cone cuts or overlapping contacts, so the fix is the alignment device rather than a higher exposure — that answer shows you understand you are repeating the patient's radiation dose.

This varies entirely by state: coronal polishing, sealants, fluoride, topical anaesthetic, temporary restorations and orthodontic duties are permitted in some states with specific training and certification and not in others. The right answer names your state board as the authority, states what your permit actually covers, and says you would confirm before performing anything new — not what a previous employer let you do.

Moisture control decides whether the bond holds: rubber dam where the dentist uses one, otherwise cotton rolls and dry angles with high-volume evacuation positioned so the field stays dry through etch, bond and cure. Change isolation before it saturates rather than after. Interviewers listen for whether you understand why isolation matters clinically rather than treating it as a chore.

Meet them before they are reclined, ask what specifically frightens them, agree a stop signal, explain each step before it happens rather than during, keep instruments out of their line of sight, and tell the dentist what you learned. Answers that promise it will not hurt are worse than useless; the credible answer gives the patient control over the pace.

Flag it to the dentist before treatment begins rather than filing it — both categories change the surgical plan and the bleeding risk. Confirm current dosing and prescriber, make sure it is recorded in the chart and not just on the form, and never make the clinical decision yourself. The scored behaviour is recognising which history entries need to be spoken aloud, not just collected.

This is the question the practice cares most about. Give a specific procedure, the point where you handed over the instrument or changed the suction position ahead of the request, and the effect — the appointment finished on time, the field stayed dry. Vague claims about being a 'great team player' are the answer that gets forgotten by the afternoon.

Show the coordination: which patient you moved, how you kept the waiting room informed, what you set up in advance so the emergency could be seen, and what you told the front desk. Dental practices live and die on the schedule, and an assistant who quietly rescues one is worth more than one who simply endures it.

Frame it around the standard rather than the person: state the protocol, ask rather than accuse, and escalate to the doctor or office manager if a genuine infection-control breach continues. Interviewers want to hear that you will raise a sterilisation issue at all — the common failure is staying quiet to keep the peace.

Say plainly that you asked, and describe the conversation: you tell the dentist what you have been trained and permitted to do, ask to be shown, and complete it under supervision the first time. Practices are legally exposed by assistants who quietly attempt duties they are not certified for, so this is a safety question dressed as a coachability question.

Use the national numbers as the frame: the BLS OEWS May 2025 median for dental assistants is $48,070 a year ($23.11/hr) with the top 10% above $62,250, and expanded-function or oral-surgery assistants sit toward the top of that. Quote a range, tie it to what you can actually do — radiographs, expanded functions, surgical assisting — and ask what the practice's range is for the role.

Directly, because they change what the practice can bill and how the schedule flows: an assistant who can take radiographs, place sealants and do coronal polishing removes work from the hygienist and the dentist. Name the permits you hold, and if you do not yet hold one, ask whether the practice sponsors the course — that is worth real money over a year.

Ask exactly how the bonus is calculated, on what production, how often it has actually paid out over the last year, and whether it survives a slow month. Then negotiate the base as if the bonus did not exist. A bonus tied to a number you do not control is not compensation you can count on for rent.
