California dental assistants earn a median $50,110 a year, $24.09 an hour, per BLS OEWS May 2025. The middle half earns between $46,270 and $60,670, and the full range is $38,790 to $73,700. California's licence ladder explains much of that spread, which is unusual for an occupation that is essentially unregulated in most states.

San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara pays the most at $74,600, then San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont at $64,390, Santa Rosa-Petaluma at $60,590, Napa at $60,270 and Vallejo at $59,000. The San Jose figure is a genuine outlier, sitting at roughly the level of the state 90th percentile, and reflects both the cost of living and the difficulty of retaining licensed assistants there.

The licence requires an approved educational pathway or documented work experience, a board-approved course in coronal polishing and radiation safety, and both written and practical examinations. It carries a wider chairside scope than unlicensed assisting, and it is the credential most California practices now expect.

Expanded-function registered dental assistants may perform defined restorative procedures under supervision, which makes them significantly more productive for a practice and is why they sit near the state 90th percentile of $73,700. It requires additional board-approved education and examination beyond the RDA.

North Carolina at $50,380, Rhode Island at $50,150, New Jersey at $49,390, Arizona at $49,000 and Michigan at $48,820 sit within about fifteen hundred dollars of California. On gross California's advantage is thin; what it has that those states largely do not is a licence ladder that lets an individual assistant move well above the state median without leaving the chair.
