Pennsylvania dental assistants earn a median $47,930 a year, or $23.05 an hour, per BLS OEWS May 2025, with a band from $38,040 at the 10th percentile to $61,430 at the 90th. That is essentially level with the national median of $48,070 — a difference of well under half a percent. The remarkable part is the top of the band: a $61,430 ninetieth percentile is far above what most states publish for dental assisting, and it exists because of Pennsylvania's Expanded Function Dental Assistant credential.

Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, at $49,570, then Pittsburgh $47,690, Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton $47,590, Harrisburg-Carlisle $47,420 and Lancaster $47,310 — the whole table inside about $2,300. That flatness is the point. In Pennsylvania the EFDA credential is worth several times what any city choice is worth, so an assistant deciding how to increase their pay should be looking at the State Board of Dentistry, not at a map.

Radiography certification is the prerequisite that makes an assistant fully deployable; EFDA is the credential that changes what the practice can bill. After that, practice type matters — oral surgery and orthodontic practices pay above general dentistry — and a clinical lead role over a team adds a further step. City choice, unusually for this site, is close to irrelevant: barely $2,300 separates the top and bottom of the Pennsylvania metro table.
