An EFDA (or EDDA/RDA-EF, names vary by state) is an assistant licensed to perform reversible clinical procedures the dentist would otherwise do — commonly placing and carving restorative material after the dentist preps the tooth, coronal polishing, sealants, and fabricating temporary crowns. Authorization comes from the state dental board after an approved course and exam. Because EFDAs directly increase practice production, they occupy the top of the assistant pay scale near $58,090 and above.

Assistants support the dentist chairside — instruments, suction, radiographs, sterilization, impressions — while hygienists are separately licensed clinicians who treat patients independently, performing cleanings, periodontal charting and screening. The education gap is real (under a year versus a three-year CODA associate plus national boards) and so is the pay gap: $48,070 median for assistants versus $98,100 for hygienists.
