How to get a dental assistant certification

   Go to the state dental board and establish three separate things: what is required to assist chairside at all, what is required to expose radiographs, and which expanded functions are delegable to assistants. These are regulated separately, and assuming one covers the others is the most common mistake in this occupation.

   Get into a practice and learn chairside

   In many states you can begin chairside assisting with no credential, training under the supervising dentist on instrument transfer, suction, sterilisation, materials and patient management. Where the state requires formal education or registration first, complete that programme before starting.

   Obtain your radiography permit

   Before exposing a single radiograph, complete whatever your state requires — commonly DANB's Radiation Health and Safety examination, a state-approved course, or both. This is the near-universal requirement in dental assisting and the one most likely to be enforced, so do it early rather than after you have started taking images.

   Earn DANB certification

   Sit the components behind the Certified Dental Assistant credential: General Chairside Assisting, Radiation Health and Safety, and Infection Control. They can be taken separately, so build toward the full credential as you go. Many state boards accept DANB components as the qualifying basis for their own registration and permits.

   Add expanded functions and keep everything current

   Apply for the expanded-function permits your state offers — coronal polishing, sealants, restorative placement, orthodontic duties — which widen your scope and your pay. Then keep CPR and infection-control training current, renew DANB certification annually with continuing education, and renew state permits on their own cycles.

The dental assistant certification exam

There is no single dental assisting examination. The Dental Assisting National Board administers the components behind the Certified Dental Assistant credential — General Chairside Assisting, Radiation Health and Safety, and Infection Control — as separate computer-based examinations that can be taken individually, which is why many assistants hold the radiography component long before the full certification. States that regulate assistants may accept DANB components in place of their own testing, may require a state-specific examination on the dental practice act, or may require both. Expanded-function permits usually carry their own course and clinical assessment. Because the combinations differ so widely, the only reliable approach is to check your state dental board's requirement for each duty you intend to perform.

You can be working chairside quickly, and the radiography permit is usually a matter of weeks. Full DANB certification and expanded-function permits typically accumulate over the first year or two.

Where a dental board is named it regulates dental assistants in some form, but the scope of that regulation varies enormously: some states register assistants generally, others regulate only radiography and expanded functions.
