No US state licenses paralegals. You practise under the supervision of an attorney, which is exactly why no licence exists, and the hard boundary is the unauthorised practice of law: you cannot give legal advice, set fees or represent clients. California is the closest thing to regulation, its Business & Professions Code section 6450 sets minimum education and mandatory continuing education for anyone who calls themselves a paralegal, but that is a title requirement, not a licence.

Anywhere from a few months to two years, depending on what you already have. A post-degree paralegal certificate on top of an existing bachelor's takes roughly three months to a year. A dedicated paralegal associate degree takes two years. If you already work in a law firm in an administrative role, some firms will train you into the paralegal seat with no additional formal education at all.

The BLS OEWS May 2025 national median is $62,890/yr ($30.24/hr) for SOC 23-2011. The bottom 10% earn about $44,740, typically entry legal assistants at small practices, while the top 10% earn more than $101,500, concentrated in intellectual property, corporate and securities work at large firms and in-house legal departments. Metro and firm size move this number more than certification does.

The programme certificate and the professional certification are different things. An ABA-approved programme certificate is what most employers look for on the education line. The professional credentials, NALA's Certified Paralegal (CP) and NFPA's Registered Paralegal (RP, earned through the PACE exam), are voluntary but function as the screening filter for senior roles and often justify a raise. If you are choosing one, NALA's CP is the most widely recognised nationally.

It is already reshaping the job, which is why BLS projects little or no employment growth through 2034: AI tools compress legal research, first-draft document production and document review, the exact tasks that used to fill a junior paralegal's week. What it does not do is own a deadline, manage a production under a protective order, or prepare a trial. The paralegals whose work is case management, e-discovery strategy and trial preparation are the ones the projection is not aimed at.

It is a strong non-licensed professional career: a $62,890 median with a two-year or certificate entry, no bar exam, and a genuine path past $100K in IP or corporate work. The costs are real too, billable-hour pressure and trial deadlines mean long weeks, the flat employment projection means you should specialise rather than stay generalist, and the ceiling is lower than the lawyer median of $159,670 that sits on the other side of law school.
