Missouri paralegals earn a median $61,410 a year, or $29.52 an hour, per BLS OEWS May 2025, with a band from $42,150 at the 10th percentile to $96,820 at the 90th. That is 2.4% below the national median of $62,890. The width of the band is the point — for a role that requires no licence anywhere in the United States, a $96,820 ninetieth percentile is a substantial income, and it is earned through specialisation rather than through tenure.

Kansas City, at $63,880, with St. Louis at $61,970. Then a cliff: St. Joseph $49,760, Columbia $49,390 and Springfield $49,210 all sit near the state's 25th percentile of $47,520. Missouri's corporate and commercial litigation work is concentrated in the two metros, and paralegal pay follows the practice area, not the population. Note that both cities levy a 1% earnings tax on wages earned there, commuters included.

No state licenses paralegals, and Missouri does not either — there is no board, examination or registry. The role is governed indirectly through the supervising attorney, who is professionally responsible for the work of non-lawyer assistants and must ensure it does not constitute the unauthorised practice of law. The credentials employers value are voluntary: the NALA Certified Paralegal, NFPA's registered paralegal credentials, and graduation from an ABA-approved programme.

The state's top rate is 4.8% after the 2024 reduction, which is moderate. The item worth planning around is that Missouri's well-paid paralegal work is almost entirely in Kansas City and St. Louis, and both cities levy a 1% earnings tax on wages earned within them regardless of where the employee lives. Specialise, and work in one of the two metros. Because paralegal pay tracks practice area, and practice areas are not evenly distributed. Kansas City and St. Louis host Missouri's corporate legal departments, its large commercial firms and the complex litigation that generates sustained document and discovery work — the practices that need specialist paralegals and can bill for them. Springfield, Columbia and St. Joseph run smaller general civil, family and criminal practices where a paralegal's role is broader but less specialised and the firm's fee structure will not support a $75,980 salary. The row is broad and the title is inconsistent. Practice area, employer type and credential, in that order. Practice area is the largest — intellectual property, complex commercial litigation and corporate transactional work pay far above family and criminal practice. Employer type is second: corporate in-house legal departments and large firms pay on structured scales with bonus components, while small firms do not. Credential is third and is the entry key rather than the differentiator — NALA or NFPA certification, or an ABA-approved programme, is what gets a candidate considered for the specialised work in the first place.
