SPD techs run the reprocessing cycle every reusable surgical instrument passes through: receiving contaminated case carts, manually cleaning and machine-washing instruments in decontamination, inspecting and reassembling them into complete surgical trays, wrapping and sterilizing the sets, and documenting every sterilizer load with chemical and biological indicators. The OR cannot cut without them — a missing or unsterile instrument stops a surgery in real time.

Through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA, formerly IAHCSMM): pass the 150-question CRCST exam, then document 400 hands-on hours in a sterile processing department. The hours can come before the exam or within six months after it on a provisional certification — which is how career-changers without hospital jobs get started, often via courses that arrange externships. No degree, ever — a high school diploma and certification are the working standard. Licensure as such doesn't exist, but several states legally require certification (CRCST or CBSPD's CSPDT) to work in the role, New Jersey and New York among them, and hospitals in non-mandate states overwhelmingly prefer certified applicants anyway. It is one of the few hospital clinical-support careers where the total training investment is measured in weeks and a single exam.

BLS OEWS May 2025 puts the median for medical equipment preparers (SOC 31-9093, the category covering SPD techs) at $47,700 a year — $22.93 an hour. Trainees start near the 10th percentile of $36,410; certified techs with instrument-specialist credentials reach the 75th percentile of $58,570; and leads, supervisors and managers top $69,950. Evening and night differentials are common since departments run hardest after the surgical day ends.

SPD teaches surgical instrumentation, aseptic principles and OR workflow — the exact foundation for surgical technologist programs, where former SPD techs excel, and a practical base for nursing, infection prevention or medical-device sales. BLS projects 10% growth for the occupation from 2024 to 2034 — faster than average — with roughly 10,900 openings a year. Surgery volume keeps rising, ambulatory surgery centers are multiplying and each needs its own reprocessing capability, and infection-control regulation keeps ratcheting up the demand for certified, auditable sterile processing. State certification mandates are also pushing hospitals to compete for credentialed techs rather than train-and-churn.
