The BLS OEWS May 2025 median is $21.75 an hour, $45,230 annualized. New collectors at outpatient draw stations start near the 10th percentile of $35,780 a year, while hospital phlebotomists with night differentials, float techs and apheresis specialists climb toward the 90th percentile of $58,780. Setting matters more than tenure: the same certificate pays differently at a strip-mall lab versus a level-one trauma center.

The knowledge load is light compared with most health careers; the craft is in the hands. Students usually find their first live sticks stressful, and competence comes from repetition across vein types — rolling veins, dehydrated elderly patients, chemo-scarred arms, frightened children. Expect the practicum, not the classroom, to be the real course. People who stay calm under mild pressure and take protocol seriously tend to be drawing confidently within weeks on the job.

Phlebotomy is healthcare's classic first rung. Common moves: medical laboratory technician (a two-year associate) or medical lab scientist, where specimen knowledge transfers directly; nursing, where venipuncture skill is a running head start; apheresis and donor-collection specialties; or lab supervision. Employers like Quest, Labcorp and hospital systems frequently fund the follow-on training, so many phlebotomists earn while upgrading credentials.

BLS projects 5.6% employment growth from 2024 to 2034 — around 18,400 openings a year once turnover and retirements are counted. Demand is structural: nearly every diagnosis and chronic-disease management plan runs on bloodwork, and outpatient lab networks keep adding patient service centers. Because the role feeds so many upward paths, churn is constant, which keeps entry-level postings open even in slow economies.
