The standard route is a commercial diving physical, then five to seven months at a school recognized by the Association of Diving Contractors International covering surface-supplied air, decompression, rigging and underwater tooling. Welding skill is expected to be brought or built alongside it, and welds are then qualified under the American Welding Society's D3.6M underwater welding code. Almost everyone spends the first year or more tending on a dive crew before being put in the water on production work.

Real underwater pay is built differently: a base rate plus dive pay, depth pay and offshore day rates, so annual earnings depend on days in the water. Yes, and the serious hazards are mostly diving hazards rather than welding ones. Decompression illness, differential pressure — where an unnoticed pressure differential can pull a diver into an intake — drowning, hypothermia and low-visibility entrapment are what dive-safety practice is built around. Welding adds electric shock risk, managed by DC power with a surface-controlled knife switch, and the risk of trapped hydrogen and oxygen pockets igniting. Contractors working to ADCI consensus standards run backup divers, supervisors and chambers for exactly these reasons.

Learn to weld first if you can, then go to dive school. Dive schools teach diving thoroughly and welding briefly; nobody becomes a competent welder underwater who was not already competent on the surface, because zero visibility and current strip away every visual cue you would normally rely on. Candidates who arrive at dive school already able to run consistent stick welds topside progress fastest, and they are also the ones contractors put in the water soonest.

Wet welding is done directly in the water with waterproofed electrodes — fast, cheap and suited to repairs where full surface-weld quality is not required, though rapid quenching makes the weld harder and more prone to hydrogen cracking. Dry hyperbaric welding seals a habitat around the joint and displaces the water with gas so the weld is made in a dry atmosphere at depth, producing far higher quality at far higher cost. AWS D3.6M defines classes for both, and each is qualified separately.

It is a genuine career for a narrow kind of person: comfortable in the water, methodical under pressure, willing to travel, and content that the work is project-driven rather than steady. The upside is scarce skill and real earnings offshore. The downside is unglamorous — long tending apprenticeships, seasonal gaps, cumulative physical and hearing effects, an annual medical you must keep passing, and 2.2% projected growth in the parent welding occupation.
