New York EMTs earn a median $48,400 a year, $23.27 an hour, per BLS OEWS May 2025, with the middle half between $43,270 and $63,870 and a full range of $39,890 to $69,210. The distribution is bottom-heavy: a large share of New York EMTs work at or near the 25th percentile in transport and interfacility roles.

New York-Newark-Jersey City pays the most at $53,820, followed by Kiryas Joel-Poughkeepsie-Newburgh at $48,400, Kingston at $45,280, Albany-Schenectady-Troy at $44,120 and Syracuse at $44,090. The New York City figure is set by municipal and hospital-system scales, so it is more predictable than a market rate but also harder to beat by moving employers.

New York certifies EMTs through the Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. You complete a state-approved Original EMT course through a certified course sponsor, pass the New York State written certification examination and the practical skills evaluation, and are then certified for three years. Recertification is by refresher course or by continuing medical education under the state's CME pathway.

New York will grant reciprocity to holders of a current National Registry certification or an equivalent out-of-state certification, but it is not automatic — you apply through the Bureau of EMS and may be required to complete New York-specific protocol training. New York does not itself require National Registry certification for state EMT certification, which is why many New York EMTs never hold an NREMT card at all.

It shapes where paid work exists more than what it pays. Large parts of upstate and suburban New York are covered by volunteer ambulance corps, so paid EMT posts in those regions are fewer and often part-time or per-diem, which is part of why Syracuse at $44,090 and Albany-Schenectady-Troy at $44,120 sit below the state median. Where volunteer coverage has failed and services have converted to paid staffing, the new posts have generally come in at competitive rather than depressed rates.

For most people here it is a step. The New York career ladder runs EMT to AEMT or Critical Care to Paramedic, and separately into FDNY EMS promotional tracks or into nursing. The 90th percentile of $69,210 is achievable as an EMT with rank and overtime, but the larger income change in this state comes from moving up the certification ladder rather than accumulating years at the EMT level.
