Twelve to twenty-four months. Certificate and diploma programs at community colleges and hospitals run about a year; associate-degree programs take two. What matters most is accreditation — CAAHEP or ABHES — because graduating from an accredited program is an eligibility requirement for the NBSTSA's CST exam. Programs combine didactic coursework in anatomy, microbiology and sterile technique with a supervised clinical caseload in the scrub role across multiple surgical specialties.

The surgical tech owns the sterile field. Before the case: setting up instrument trays from the surgeon's preference card, counting sponges and needles with the circulator, and draping the patient and equipment. During: passing instruments — ideally before the surgeon asks — cutting suture, managing specimens, running the electrosurgery and suction lines, and policing sterility, including calling out anyone who breaks it. After: final counts, specimen handoff and room turnover. First assistants go further, retracting and suturing under the surgeon's direction.

The BLS OEWS May 2025 median for surgical technologists (SOC 29-2055) is $64,650 a year, or $31.08 an hour. New graduates start near the 10th percentile of $45,940; experienced techs in cardiovascular, neurosurgery and robotics services climb toward the 75th percentile of $79,750; and certified surgical first assistants, OR leads and travel-contract techs occupy the 90th percentile at $96,940. Call pay and callback hours add real money in trauma centers.

The CST from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting is the field's standard credential, and a growing list of states — a trend that began with New York, Texas, and others — legally requires new surgical technologists to hold it, with more legislatures adding requirements each cycle. Even where the law is silent, most hospitals hire only certified techs or require certification within a probation window. Eligibility runs through CAAHEP/ABHES-accredited program graduation, and the credential renews on continuing education.

The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential, also administered by the NBSTSA, credentials the tech who works directly in the wound — providing exposure and retraction, achieving hemostasis, and suturing and stapling under the surgeon's direction. The path requires an accredited surgical-assisting program plus documented first-assist cases, and most candidates bring years of CST experience first. The jump matters financially: first assistants bill differently and sit at the top decile of the occupation's pay range.

Yes — it is the fastest way to become a working member of a surgical team, and the exposure compounds. CSTs routinely bridge into operating-room nursing (with an RN degree the OR experience makes them immediately valuable), surgical-assistant practice via the CSFA, sterile processing leadership, medical-device sales — where scrub experience is a hiring magnet — and OR management. Robotics coordinators are a newer branch: techs who master da Vinci workflows become the program's institutional memory.
