A median $45,550 a year, or $21.90 an hour, per BLS OEWS May 2025 — 2.4% above the national median of $44,470, which is unusual for this occupation. The band is tight: $33,910 at the 10th percentile, $37,820 at the 25th, $48,400 at the 75th and $52,600 at the 90th.

Gainesville at $47,710, then Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell $47,500, Macon-Bibb County $45,780, Albany $45,070 and Augusta-Richmond County $45,060. Under three thousand dollars covers the whole table, so moving within Georgia for EMT pay is not a meaningful strategy — the state is essentially one market.

Through the Department of Public Health's Office of EMS and Trauma, which licenses EMTs, designates the state's trauma centres and regulates ambulance services. The route is completion of an approved EMT course, the national certification examination, and state licensure with background clearance. Advanced EMT and paramedic are separate, higher certification levels through the same office, and moving up them is the only formal progression the state recognises.

The band is narrow enough that the honest answer is limited. Within the EMT scope, the levers are advanced EMT certification, shift and overtime availability — worth proportionally more in Georgia because the flat tax does not penalise extra hours — and moving to a service in the Gainesville or Atlanta markets, which is worth about two thousand dollars. The route that actually changes the number is the paramedic scope, which sits in a different occupational band entirely and is what most career EMS providers in this state pursue.

Partly demand and partly geography. A location quotient of 1.10 on about 6,260 EMTs means the state employs them above the national rate, and Georgia's large rural areas require ambulance services to cover long distances with small crews — coverage that must be staffed regardless of call volume. That sustains demand outside the metros where the labour market is thinnest. Because the scope of practice is fixed by certification and the employers are mostly public or contracted services operating on constrained budgets. It is an annual wage in an occupation with heavy and variable overtime, so two EMTs on the same hourly rate can report quite different annual figures depending on shift pattern and how much of the roster they pick up. The estimate also pools EMTs across 911 services, interfacility transport, hospital-based and event work, which have different pay structures. And it does not include volunteer or part-time-only providers, who are a real part of Georgia's rural EMS capacity.

Certification level first, and it is the only lever the state recognises — advanced EMT within this band, then paramedic beyond it. Overtime availability second, worth proportionally more here because the flat state tax rate does not rise with hours. Employer type third, since larger county and municipal services in the Gainesville and Atlanta markets pay above smaller rural and private transport operators. And field training or supervisory assignment fourth, which is what the $48,400 seventy-fifth percentile and $52,600 ninetieth mostly describe.
